SHANGHAI SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA & SPLIT WORKS
PRESENT
CONTEMPORALE, 2015 – 2016
In late 2014, Split Works and the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra launched an ambitious project. The idea was to bring contemporary artists into a classical music environment – the new home of the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra.
The 2014-15 season saw piano, guitar and strings from the Ukraine (Lubomyr Melnyk), Canada (Moonface) and the US (Bill Callahan). Fully sold out Chamber Halls encouraged the combined braintrust of the two teams to expand its programme for the 2015-16 season, taking in twice the number of artists and a series of shows in the 1,200 seat Concert Hall.
Since last October, we’ve been hard at work putting together a lineup that will create a precedent for entertainment in China. We have neo-Classical, singer-songwriters, indie rock, alt-country, alt-rock and space rock, and we spread as far afield as Iceland, Ireland, the US, the UK and Canada.
We wrote when we announced Contemporale 2014-15 that, as an independent promoter most used to the grime and realities of China’s best livehouses and clubs, it is such a privilege to present music that needs the enhanced acoustics of a venue like the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra Hall, as well as the support of the institution. There are so many great venues in China – theatres, concert halls, etc. – but so few of them are willing to really support non-traditional repertoire. That’s why the Shanghai Symphony is so genuinely forward looking and open minded, and for that we are truly grateful.
And so to the meat: who do we have appearing? For the 2015-16 season of Contemporale, we present six diverse and incredibly exciting artists, four in the smaller Chamber Hall and two in the 1,200 seat Concert Hall.
