“It’s sublime.” – Guardian review of Lambchop’s latest album, Mr. M.

“Ethereal, melancholy, and just plain strange” – Rolling Stone review of Mr. M.

Contemporale’s sixth and final performance for the 2015-2016 season sees a truly unique performance from one of America’s most quirky bands – Lambchop. Following on from Damien Rice’s brilliant Contemporale performance in the larger Symphony Hall, Lambchop will bring their provocative country blues to Shanghai on May 19. Audience members will be transported by the band’s rich visual imagination in the Chamber Hall’s intimate setting.

It’s been nearly two decades since Lambchop released its first album, at the time pronouncing itself Nashville’s most twisted country band. Provocative it may have been, but the description made sense: at the heart of all that ruckus was a band at once defying and embracing the musical legacy of its hometown. Since then, Lambchop has evolved into an accomplished ensemble, adding palpable depth and substance to singer-songwriter-guitarist Kurt Wagner’s songs—and the band sounds as commanding as ever on its 11th album, Mr. M, a collection of meditations on love and loss and the detritus of everyday existence.

Lambchop may not sound in any conventional way like a country band (even the steel guitar, once prominent, is long gone from the band’s lineup), and yet the essential spirit of country music—the sound of someone just trying to make sense of life’s little ups and downs—remains present in its music.

Split Works along with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra looks forward to sharing this, the last of six performances for the 2015-2016 Contemporale season, with its audience.

About Contemporale

The Contemporale series began in the autumn of 2014 as a collaboration between the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra and Split Works and hosts exciting contemporary musical acts in a classical music environment, at the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra’s new home in downtown Shanghai.

The 2014-15 season saw piano, guitar and strings from the Ukraine (Lubomyr Melnyk), Canada (Moonface) and the US (Bill Callahan).  With fully sold out Chamber Halls across the season, Contemporale has expanded its programme for the 2015-16 season, taking in twice the number of artists and including performances in the 1,200 seat Concert Hall.
