[:en]One of the catchiest, breeziest bands you\u2019ll hear.<\/b><\/p>\n

Cero play chic, sophisticated Japanese \u201ccity pop\u201d with a touch of funk, soul and RnB.<\/p>\n

This Tokyo-based \u2018Contemporary Exotic Orchestra\u2019 is a warm daydream, with lovely understated guitar lines, catchy vocal harmonies that ebb and swell, and a backbeat that shapeshifts between polyrhythms and quirky time signatures.<\/p>\n

A glorious addition to Japan\u2019s tendency of throwing up some of music\u2019s most surprising oddities,\u00a0cero\u00a0<\/b>are hard to pin down stylistically: drifting incestuously across genres. To our ears, they\u2019re somewhere next to the slow-burn of Grizzly Bear and the smoldering haze of Japanese reggae legends Fishmans. Add to that, a generous doze of danceable groove.<\/p>\n

After a long-overdue China debut at Concrete & Grass 2017, they\u2019re back for a\u00a0two-city China tour.\u00a0<\/b>\u00a0Sat October 20 at Hangzhou\u2019s MAO Livehouse. Sunday the 21st<\/sup>\u00a0in Shanghai\u2019s LOFAS.<\/p>\n

Cero are the trio of Shohei Takagi (vocals \/ flute)<\/p>\n

Yu Arauchi (keys) and TsubasaHashimoto (guitar) with a rotating cast of performers and instrumentalists fleshing out the \u201corchestra\u201d when playing live.<\/p>\n

They formed in 2004, and in the years since have explored \u201cnocturnal indie-pop, intricate jazz-pop and, on the 2015 album\u00a0Obscure Ride<\/i>\u00a0that served as their breakthrough into the mainstream, laid-back funk.\u201d The single \u2018Summer Soul\u2019 was championed by the massively popular boy band SMAP and cero smashed the \u201cindie\u201d glass ceiling into wider attention.<\/p>\n

Success for cero, though, only meant more experimentation and not less. For 2018\u2019s\u00a0Poly Life Multi Soul,\u00a0<\/i>they\u2019ve constructed topsy-turvy songs loaded up with polyrhythms and other musical techniques originating from around the globe.
\nThey\u2019re on a hot streak, and the latest incarnation of their live show is a joyous, danceable feast.\u00a0Cero<\/b>\u00a0back in China. Two nights of Summer souls in autumn hues.<\/p>\n
