For your friends at Split Works, that spot has always been about pushing \u2018music that works\u2019 \u2013 from the wildly appealing to the urgently necessary. From Mika to Sonic Youth. From Black Rabbit to Concrete & Grass. No grand plans, and only some delusions of grandeur. And always great music. Something new. Something different. Something that gives rather than takes.<\/p>\n

10 whole years. 2006-2016.<\/p>\n

The thought makes us giddy. A decade of shows, gigs, and festivals, from Xinjiang to Guangdong. From tours held together with duct tape to ambitious productions. Shows that spared many expenses but never reigned in the love and heart. It\u2019s been a privilege and an honour. A decade in, and we\u2019re still humbled and grateful everyday.<\/p>\n

A whole decade.<\/p>\n

We can scarcely believe it. So let\u2019s keep on doing the unbelievable. Here\u2019s what we have planned for our 10th<\/sup> birthday bash. As always, something new, something classic, and something unexpected.<\/p>\n

We first bought Jos\u00e9 Gonz\u00e1lez to China in 2009, back when we still had MSN email addresses and chatted on QQ. The Swedish troubadour has exponentially multiplied his popularity since, gathering critical acclaim and mainstream visibility \u2013 most notably on the soundtracks to the videogame Red Dead Redemption <\/em>and the film The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.<\/em><\/p>\n

Jos\u00e9 returns to open the third season of our \u2018Contemporale\u2019 series, which we co-present with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra. We can\u2019t wait to gaze into the crystalline miniatures his songs evoke: \u201cDawn is coming open your eyes \/ Look into the sun as a new days rise.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\n<\/strong>P.K. 14 + Eagulls + Dirty Fingers + Wooozy DJs<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u5341 marks the spot. At a secret location in Shanghai, we\u2019re throwing our big, brash birthday bash.<\/p>\n

On the bill: Post-punk upstarts Eagulls<\/strong>, supporting post-punk royalty P.K. 14. <\/strong>Yang Haisong and co. are \u201cChina\u2019s most influential band\u201d (Vice<\/em>), and one of the central foundations of the country\u2019s indie scene today. They were one of the first groups we toured, way back in 2008, they\u2019ve played our festival main stages, and been a massive support to both us and China\u2019s independent music scene for the last 10 years. They\u2019re extraordinary, and we can\u2019t think of a better band to cap our decade long journey.<\/p>\n

Bonus damage:<\/strong> Shanghai\u2019s own Dirty Fingers <\/strong>will kindly help us get the party started, and Wooozy DJs<\/strong> will keep you on your toes.<\/p>\n

There\u2019ll be craft booze, crafted food, and plenty of other surprises. We ask for a \u2018donation\u2019 of 150 RMB for entry, and the location will be revealed to generous donors a few days prior to the event.<\/p>\n
