In a cinematic and musical tour de force never before seen in China, this spring Split Works and JUE | Music + Art are honored to present CINEMA SOLORIENS by James Harrar and featuring Marshall Allen. Marrying Harrar\u2019s deeply personal silent film-poems with Allen\u2019s prodigious musical talent, Cinema Soloriens is a divisive, visceral, truly unique out-of-body psychological experience.<\/p>\n

Marshall Allen is an American free jazz<\/a> and avant-garde jazz<\/a> alto saxophone<\/a> player. He also performs on flute<\/a>, oboe<\/a>, piccolo<\/a>, etc. Allen is best known for his work with eccentric keyboardist\/bandleader Sun Ra<\/a>, having recorded and performed mostly in this context since the late 1950s, and having led Sun Ra’s Arkestra since 1993. Critic Jason Ankeny describes Marshall as “one of the most distinctive and original saxophonists of the postwar era.”<\/p>\n

Cinema Soloriens is a multi-media performance consisting of James Harrar\u2019s experimental and highly personal film and video images with a live musical rendering of soundtracks for each film. The musical concepts are created, directed and performed by Harrar (tenor sax, flute, bulbul tarang, reeds, voice and effects) with Marshall Allen (alto sax, flute, keyboards, EVI and effects).<\/p>\n

The project places attention on Artist collaboration, exploring the moving image with live performance and when combined, an attempt to reveal deeper levels of interpretation within Harrar\u2019s filmic works. Any musical incarnation of Cinema Soloriens reveals a group possessing a penchant for psychedelic rock, outre ethnological improvisations and Marshall Allen-approved jazzy stomps of which these performances deliver in equal measure. Joining Harrar and Allen on stage in Beijing will be acclaimed dancer, choreographer and leader of the Beijing Modern Dance Troupe Gaoyan Jinzi, who with a small corps of dancers will performance an improvised contemporary dance piece set to both Harrar\u2019s film and Allen and Harrar\u2019s musical stylings.<\/p>\n

Various incarnations of Cinema Soloriens have received praise from around the world for their \u201cprovocative, exciting collaboration\u201d (Japan Times); \u201crigorous self-expression and indifference to audience approval\u201d (Dyverse Music); and \u201cbright, distorted sound [which] is a relentless torrent of tiny flint chips as the group hold down a constant barrage of squalling noise\u201d\u00a0 (Venue [UK]). \u8fd9\u4e2a\u9879\u76ee\u5c06\u6ce8\u610f\u529b\u96c6\u4e2d\u5728\u4e24\u4f4d\u827a\u672f\u5bb6\u7684\u5408\u4f5c\uff0c\u63a2\u7d22\u5f71\u50cf\u4e0e\u73b0\u573a\u8868\u6f14\u5bf9Harrar\u7684\u4f5c\u54c1\u8868\u73b0\u51fa\u7684\u66f4\u6df1\u523b\u7684\u8be0\u91ca\u3002\u4efb\u4f55Cinema Soloriens\u7684\u97f3\u4e50\u5316\u8eab\u90fd\u63ed\u9732\u4e86\u4ed6\u5bf9\u8ff7\u5e7b\u6447\u6eda\u3001\u6c11\u65cf\u5373\u5174\u521b\u4f5c\u7684\u7b2c\u559c\u7231\uff0c\u800cMarshall Allen\u5219\u4ee5\u540c\u6837\u7684\u65b9\u5f0f\u52a0\u5165\u7235\u58eb\u5143\u7d20\u3002\u5728\u5317\u4eac\u573a\uff0c\u8fd8\u4f1a\u6709\u8457\u540d\u821e\u8e48\u5bb6\u3001\u7f16\u821e\u5bb6\u3001\u5317\u4eac\u73b0\u4ee3\u821e\u56e2\u7684\u9ad8\u6d25\u8273\u5b50\u5e26\u9886\u5979\u7684\u5c0f\u578b\u821e\u56e2\uff0c\u5728Harrar\u7684\u7535\u5f71\u548cAllen\u7684\u97f3\u4e50\u4e0b\u8868\u6f14\u5373\u5174\u521b\u4f5c\u7684\u5f53\u4ee3\u821e\u8e48\u3002<\/p>\n
