The best punk rock isn’t an ‘assault’ as much as it’s a challenge. A challenge to what’s normal, to what’s comfortable, to what’s expected.
METZ are punk rock incarnate, as those who were there for their last China shows know too well. They are an empathic but artful hammer swing to the status quo. Pure yet intricately arranged redline chaos.
Their music is uninhibited and urgent, a kind of sonic venting, a truculent social commentary that bludgeons and provokes, excites and unsettles. It’s important noise.

METZ formed in 2007, fueled by a desire to return to everything that’s good about loud, ecstatic live music; a frantic nod to bands like Nation of Ulysses, Shellac, The Pixies, The Jesus Lizard, and Public Image Ltd. at their most vicious, while carving out some heavy new business.
METZ, the band’s self-titled and formidable debut full-length came out in 2012, was shortlisted for the Polaris Prize, and received much critical acclaim. METZ II followed in 2015. Both live and on record, The METZs articulated with deafening clarity what we’ve known for some time: The world of good music needed a new power trio, and they were it.
“We take our noise and our feedback very seriously,” Edkins says. Their third studio album, Strange Peace, was recorded with Steve Albini and released last year to acclaim: making a number of year-end lists. “Underneath all the distortion and angst, it’s pop music, “ wrote NPR. “Only contorted and deconstructed with gleeful mania.” It moved into new, alarmingly loud territory even for them: capturing the insanity of their electrifying live show.
How lucky we are, reviews said, that a band like METZ can help us channel the collective anger and defiance of our times. To feel something, fiercely and intensely, but together, not alone.
