Qu Wanting became a media darling when her song “Drenched” was featured in the trailer for this year’s hotly-tipped Hong Kong comedy “Love in the Buff”. This, however, was by no means the only significant entry on Wanting’s dramatic CV. In 2009, the Harbin-born Chinese girl was signed by top Canadian record label Nettwerk, becoming the first ever-Chinese singer-songwriter signed in 26 years. Immediately after the signing, her songs were chosen by Mercedes-Benz and featured in a worldwide campaign. In 2011, after hearing the songs she wrote and recorded, the renowned Chinese composer Zhang Yadong got in touch with the young artist and expressed the desire to collaborate soon.
Her signature voice, her ability to bring out the simplest and purest beauty of piano and guitar are at the foundation of her success, yet what truly sets her apart are the strength and courage with which she had pursued her music career. At only 16, Wanting left home and enrolled in a Canadian school, and started her life in a foreign country alone. Her mother, who hoped that her daughter would study business management, refused to talk to her for three years. She worked odd jobs to make ends meet but never gave up her dreams of being a musician. When the right opportunity presented itself, she bravely introduced herself to the CEO of Nettwerk.
