2015-16 CONTEMPORALE Series: Destroyer Shanghai Show

CONTEMPORALE
Shanghai Symphony Orchestra

Curated by Split Works

Presents: Destroyer

“No one sounds quite like Dan Bejar—in classic sum-is-greater-than-the-parts fashion, he’s emerged over the past 15 years as one of indie-rock’s most unique and idiosyncratic voices, forging an identity so distinct.”  – Pitchfork.com

Contemporale’s fourth performance for the 2015-2016 season sees an intense and nimble performances from one of Canada’s most eclectic performers – Destroyer. Proceeding John Grant’s spine-tingling Contemporale performance in the Chamber Hall, Destroyer will bring his melodic verve and blue-eyed soul sadness to Shanghai on April 17.

Supporting them in Beijing will be Uncle Hu, with cozy, whispery little nostalgia-drenched songs of their own.

Dan Bejar started Destroyer as a solo home-recording project in the early to mid-nineties. Exploring and overturning genres such as glam, MIDI, yacht rock, and even underground Spanish independent artists, Bejar was proclaimed “Rock’s Exiled King” by The Fader. As Destroyer, Bejar has released 10 studio albums and 4 EPs to date, with an eagerly awaited eleventh – Poison Season released in August 2015. No two records sound the same, but they’re always uniquely Destroyer. His is a body of work that consistently flouts convention in favor of musical leaps of faith, statements of purpose cloaked in subterfuge, and the joyous refrain of an optimist’s heart cloaked in cynicism.

Split Works along with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra looks forward to sharing this, the fourth of six performances, with its audience.

About Contemporale

The Contemporale series began in the autumn of 2014 as a collaboration between the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra and Split Works and hosts exciting contemporary musical acts in a classical music environment, at the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra’s new home in downtown Shanghai.

The 2014-15 season saw piano, guitar and strings from the Ukraine (Lubomyr Melnyk), Canada (Moonface) and the US (Bill Callahan).  With fully sold out Chamber Halls across the season, Contemporale has expanded its programme for the 2015-16 season, taking in twice the number of artists and including performances in the 1,200 seat Concert Hall.
