2015-16 CONTEMPORALE Series: Damien Rice

CONTEMPORALE
Shanghai Symphony Orchestra

Curated by Split Works

Presents: Damien Rice

“The Voice that Inspired a Generation” – The Telegraph

Contemporale’s penultimate performance for the 2015-16 season sees the tender, fragile yet visceral music of singer-songwriter Damien Rice. Following on from Destroyer’s eclectic Contemporale performance in the Chamber Hall, Damien Rice will bring his magnificent, emotionally raw songs to the larger Symphony Hall. Audience members will be transported by his sparkling, nuanced songwriting in the hall’s expanded acoustic space.

Over the course of his 12-year solo career Damien Rice has been called “nothing short of a complete package of art, personality and presence” (Los Angeles Times) and “the most poignant and scrappy songwriter around” (Newsweek), releasing three full-length albums, two live recordings and an EP.

His latest, My Favourite Faded Fantasy, follows the seminal O which sold two million copies worldwide, won the prestigious Shortlist Prize, spent 10 weeks on the Billboard 200, spent 80 weeks on the U.K. chart—as well as the million-selling, Brit-nominated follow-up, 9.

Split Works along with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra looks forward to sharing this, the fifth of six performances, with its audience.

About Contemporale

The Contemporale series began in the autumn of 2014 as a collaboration between the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra and Split Works and hosts exciting contemporary musical acts in a classical music environment, at the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra’s new home in downtown Shanghai.

The 2014-15 season saw piano, guitar and strings from the Ukraine (Lubomyr Melnyk), Canada (Moonface) and the US (Bill Callahan).  With fully sold out Chamber Halls across the season, Contemporale has expanded its programme for the 2015-16 season, taking in twice the number of artists and including performances in the 1,200 seat Concert Hall.
