Concrete & Grass Presents: Benjamin Francis Leftwich

Late afternoon, Shanghai. Last year.
The main stage at Concrete & Grass 2016.

“In another life / like mayflies / we’ll take over the sky
In another world / away from here.”

Many of us were already in other worlds.Benjamin Francis Leftwich’s set at our Place Less Ordinary was a gentle highlight: understated, with its heartbreakingly pretty melodies.

We’re delighted to be bringing him back to China for a series of solo headlining shows.

Come along for three evenings of acoustic contemplation.
Beijing: Friday, June 16 (Mao Livehouse)
Shanghai:Saturday, June 17 (Yuyintang)
Guangzhou: Sunday, June 18 (T:Union TU).

We might have a few surprises on-site, maybe even hints on who’s coming to Concrete & Grass 2017. =)

Benjamin Francis Leftwich is the classic delicate songwriter. His songs are tender and timeless.

A romantic’s delight, with a beautiful lilting voice and a way with words that belies his age.”

His life was thrown into an unexpected path after his huge 2011 debut album, Last Smoke Before the Snowstorm (100,000 copies worldwide;150 million Spotify plays and counting), when his father passed away from lung cancer.

The loss of a parent is one of the hardest things in life, and for Leftwich his father was also his number one source of inspiration.

But put a mind and voice like his through tragedy and hardship, and out it comes: heartbreaking, melancholy, shatteringly beautiful music.

In a world where electronic production is increasingly drowning out the acoustic guitar in the arsenal of the singer-songwriter, Benjamin Francis Leftwich is unafraid to stick to the classics. Expansive though his music may be, it’s always rooted in those six strings and that hollow wooden body.

His new collection of songs, 2016’s After the Rain, sees him channeling haunted spirits. “Leftwich sings, and the hurt in his voice accumulates with each word, making it easy to envision him as the outcasted lover his lyric paints: guitar-in-hand, shivering, waiting out in the dark for someone to take him by the lips and lead him inside.” (Pop Matters). It’s both haunting and calming.

Three-city tour, June 2017.Expect elegant acoustic beauty backed up by his painfully fragile voice. Pay attention to his words: they’re filled with quizzical melancholy and sensitive introspection.
